Since the standard was developed most RS485 chips present less than the full unit load originally specified. It stands for Unit Load. Today you get half and quarter load devices. Each search involves sending a message and waiting for a response or a timeout (if the devices isn't there). There are nonelectrical considerations to determine how many devices you put on an MSTP network. The other devices (the slaves) respond by giving the requested data to the master, or by taking the action requested in the query. Look for UL on the data sheet. A clue to knowing if you selected one is to look at the cables Nominal Impedance. Do the devices support the Read/Write Property Multiple services or must each property be read in a separate message.Find the answer to this question by reading the BIBs statement for each device or you could explore the device object of the device, find the property called BACnetServicesSupported and then look at the 14th item in the array to see if Read Property Multiple is supported and the 16th for Write Property Multiple. If you have not yet compiled the GETSTART program and you want to do the exercises here, open GETSTART.C in your TextPad editor, click on the Make Tool (the Make icon), and after the compilation is done, enter the Terminal Program by clicking on the terminal icon and use the "Send Text File" menu item to send GETSTART.DLF to the QVGA Controller.

The chart below illustrates (from one installation) how little of the bandwidth is used to transfer data. Token passing and looking for new devices on the MSTP trunk consumes a fair amount of bandwidth. The rest is used to maintain the network passing the token around and looking for new devices. A token is 8 bytes as is a Poll for master. In unicast mode, the master will initiate a request to a single slave with a specific address. It takes approx 30 bytes to poll for a single property. It takes about 40 bytes to reply. At the end of a received character, the service routine takes about 45 µs. They are often terminated with 8 pin RJ45 connectors at either end.
As 19 coils (20-38) are required, what is rs485 cable 3 bytes is used to indicate the coil's state. Divide the baud rate by 10 to get bytes per seconds. To further reduce the effects of interference, a low Baud rate of 2400 (or 1200) Baud is used. The SPI can transfer data much more rapidly than an asynchronous serial link - its maximum rate is 2 Megabits/second. However, the higher the baud rate the more sensitive the cable is to the quality of installation issues like how much twisted pair is unwound at each termination start to become very very important. Our advice: For longer networks with lots of devices, choose 38k400 baud over 76k800 baud and optimize using COV, separate networks and by setting the Max Master to a lower number. Assume that 50% of your bandwidth will be used by overhead (token, poll for master). If you use Max master to improve bandwidth then you must adjust it in each device. What is Max Master Set to?Every few cycles each (master) token passing device on the network must look to see if there are new devices. Max Master determines the biggest address that must be searched for.
Timeouts cost time. The higher the number of Max Master (default is 127) the more potential devices must be searched for. A Modbus RS485 connects a Master device to one or more Slave devices. The DWOM bit determines whether Port D needs pull-up resistors; it should be set to 0. The MSTR bit determines whether the device is a master or slave. When a device supports COV another device/application can subscribe to receive notifications when an object property changes. This connection may be used to limit the common-mode signal that can be impressed on the receiver inputs. RS485 is commonly 2 wire for bidirection, but may some times be 4 wire with one pair in and the other out. You want one of these cables. All cables offer impedance (resistance). If they quote an impedance per meter/foot you have chosen the wrong kind. Some cables are designed so that the impedance is relatively independent of distance. Choose low capacitance cables. We recommend these two cables. For RS232 operation: Install the jumper shunt across the two pins closest to the crystal (the default configuration).
