Overview
Derby is investing heavily in its estate and reshaping its course portfolio to keep the institution at the academic cutting-edge - and to keep its graduates in demand with employers. A new business school will be open for next September's intake - a key enhancement for a university that works closely with business and industry. Derby ranks second in our subject tables for business studies. More than 60 new courses and nine new degree apprenticeships will diversify Derby's appeal, too. They include zeitgeisty degrees such as artificial intelligence, as well as highly relevant twin-subject courses like English and publishing, psychology and sport studies, and popular music and business management. The university has a strong regional identity, recruiting three-quarters of its students from the East and West Midlands. A mid-sized university of around 20,000 students, it is based on four sites in Derby and headquartered at Kedleston Road, with a healthcare outpost in Chesterfield. It provides a significant number of graduates to the public sector (via nursing, teaching and social work especially). This helped its strong performance in our jobs ranking, which is based on the proportion of graduates going into high-skilled jobs within 15 months of leaving.

Paying the bills
Following a review of provision, the University of Derby bursary will pay out £1,000 in cash to eligible students from households with up to £25,000 annual income, dropping to £600 for those from households with an income of between £25,001 and £36,592. National and international-standard athletes can qualify for sports scholarships worth up to £3,000 in fee subsidies plus free support services. Derby accommodation prices for 2024-25 have been held pretty much at the previous year's rates. More than 300 rooms at the cheapest price will cost £4,845 for a 42-week contract in the upcoming academic year, which is an increase of just £15 a year on 2023-24 prices. The most expensive undergraduate rooms will come in at £7,341 for a 42-week tenancy.

What's new?
Among 63 new degrees recruiting students for admission this month are a suite of courses in artificial intelligence (AI). With an eye to the employability of its graduates, Derby has focused on the application of AI in specific areas such as healthcare, digital marketing, psychology, human resources and criminology. A new business school will be open in time for next September, providing a key bridge between the university and the wider community through its focus on entrepreneurial growth and business connectivity. The net-zero-carbon build will bring students and employers together in business engagement zones, and will also feature a stock trading room, 다파벳가입 an extended reality (XR) suite and creative laboratories. A new 200-person biomedical super-lab will strengthen Derby's presence in this field of study, focusing on haematology, immunology, histopathology, molecular biology, genetics, and cell and tissue culture. Derby is also adding nine degree apprenticeships to an already extensive portfolio, which should take the number of apprenticeship learners beyond 2,000. The majority will significantly expand its healthcare jobs coverage; these include paramedic, midwife, public health practitioner, physiotherapist, occupational health and academic professional in health.

Admissions, teaching and student support
Derby scores well for student support in the annual National Student Survey, and this support takes many forms. Careers help is woven into the curriculum, allowing students to enhance their employability skills while they study. They get the chance to work on real-world projects, called live briefs, and attend employer-led sessions to help prepare them for the workplace. An on-campus internship scheme, placement academy and the Derby Talent Programme all help guide students towards work experience during their studies. Mental health support is extensive, well signposted and tailored to individual needs. A team of counsellors, mental health practitioners and mentors all offer assistance to students in need. The university takes campus safety seriously, too, delivering online consent workshops throughout the year. In the spring, this module is delivered to all sports students who are going on sporting tours around the country. Derby introduced a contextual admissions system for students who enrolled this month, which can reduce offers by 16 Ucas tariff points (two A-level grades) compared to the published requirements. Among those eligible to receive such offers are the care experienced, those estranged from their families, students whose parents or carers are in the Armed Forces, and refugees or asylum seekers. This should help diversify Derby's intake still further. It has already nearly double the average number of students drawn from areas with the lowest university participation rates, and significantly above average proportions of mature and disabled students, as well as those who were eligible for free school meals. Derby was named University of the Year at the 2020 UK Social Mobility Awards.
