The steel version of the hood would be used in later years as the centerpiece of the Formula option and in 1990, the remaining inventory of aluminum turbo hoods were sent to SLP for the '91-'92 Formula Firehawks. A new, smaller "Phoenix" was placed upon the Turbo Bulge hood or on the nose of flat hood equipped T/A's. The well-worn Borg-Warner 4-speed manual transmission came mated only to the 145 bhp LG4 305ci, while the Crossfire-injected LU5 305ci rated at 165 hp came with the TH-200c automatic 3-speed transmission.
Designed to fit the standard 23 degree small block chevy cylinder heads, these bolt-on turbo headers are the perfect solution to any turbo header packaging concerns. Made of heavy wall, American Made stainless steel pipe, these modular log manifolds can handle the heat and vibrations that come from a turbocharged engine build. They are a great bolt on turbo header for nearly any factory or aftermarket small block chevy turbo header application. Maybe you are gearing up for street racing and don’t want to waste time fiddling with an ill-fitted header. From the street to the track, a custom header is key to your car attaining peak performance.
The 5.3-liter Vortec V8 was installed in 2022 and is said to have been sourced from a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe. An Edelbrock air cleaner, an aluminum radiator, electric cooling fans, and Speed Engineering long-tube exhaust headers have been fitted. The Vortec 7400 L21 was a commercial version of the Chevrolet big-block engine used in the medium duty truck platform. Its design shared much with the L29 454, but with the addition of forged pistons and crankshaft, and coil near plug ignition.
Headers are designed to work with either straight or angle plug heads. Prices may increase or decrease depending on material, tube size, collector style, header finish, etc. Since every application is unique Contact Us for a quote on your next set of Custom Headers. Not a problem- We can custom build turbo elbows to fit your turbo header needs.
Producing superior performance through quality craftsmanship and custom design. We treat every exhaust system as if it is to be fitted to our own car, and every client like family. When the mockup is complete, you ship the header back to GPHeaders for it to be replicated from either Mild or Stainless steel.
The wrap-around wing was now made of fiberglass to reduce weight and became standard on Trans Am and Formula; the regular, flat-surfaced spoiler from earlier Trans Am models was now made standard on Firebird. Trans Am and Formula were also offered with an optional 140 mph speedometer. It too used the new for '85 nose and rear bumper, but it now included some new items to set it apart.

Rather, we take great pride in our ability to provide a service that makes a real difference in our customers’ lives.
Full-length or long tube headers are the most recognizable header setup, usually consisting of long primaries tubes converging into a 4-into-1 style collector. The long primary tubes reduce the chance that you will have back-feed of gases into a different tube. These headers help to produce the most overall power with a broad spread through the low- to mid-rpm ranges. The roof was chopped and the exterior was shaved before the car was refinished in matte black with red pinstriping.
Mechanical lifters and Tri power brought the "Special Super Turbo-Thrust" up to 315 hp (235 kW). For 1959 and 1960, high-output versions of the top two engines were produced with 320 hp (239 kW) and 335 hp (250 kW) respectively. In 1961, power was again increased to 340 hp (254 kW) for the single four-barrel model, and 338 hp (252 kW) when equipped with Tri power. The combustion chamber of the W-series engine was in the upper part of the cylinder, not the head, the head having only tiny recesses for the valves. This arrangement was achieved by combining a cylinder head deck that was not perpendicular to the bore with a crowned piston, which was a novel concept in American production engines of the day. As the piston approached top dead center, the angle of the crown combined with that of the head deck to form a wedge-shaped combustion chamber with a pronounced quench area.
The three actual pace cars were randomly selected from the production run, and sent to Indianapolis to pace the race. Thus, the pace car replicas were closer to the actual pace cars than any replica previously offered; the only difference between the replicas and the three actual pace cars was the addition of strobe lights and safety equipment to the latter. As has been proven to be the case in subsequent years, relying on a small engine for cruising, and a turbocharger for power, provides an exciting driving experience while returning impressive fuel mileage. In 1989, Pontiac produced the quickest[15] and fastest[16] American production car.
This also allowed GM to experiment with some of the new technologies which were to be implemented on the fourth generation cars. The Formula was the only third-generation F-body to get to T-tops with a 350 cubic inch engine starting in MID year 1991 & 1992, to get a FORMULA 350 T-top car the black cross laced wheels (as installed on the Trans AM) were mandatory. Today, Pat brings that experience of driving a race car into the engine-building room at Pat Musi Racing Engines where many of the top Pro Mod racers go for their race-winning engines. As he has since 2004, Pat works exclusively with us to share his expertise in the Edelbrock-Musi Crate Engine Program that was created specifically for drag racers looking for big horsepower with unmatched durability. The street segment of this partnership includes the Edelbrock-Musi 555 Crate Engine, a complete ready-to-run power plant that makes an incredible 723 horsepower and 652 ft-lbs of torque on pump gas. We include things like hood hinges and a complete custom chassis wiring harness.
The design delivers a unique, eye-catching appearance to the engines of street rods, customs cars and trucks. Where other header manufacturers use a typical flat header flange and gasket for sealing, the patented raised flange design of the Sanderson Headers requires different flanges for different small block chevy sbc headers exhaust port shapes. Other header flanges will often block the top of the exhaust port on D-port heads. However, using the wrong flange with a Sanderson header may expose open areas that will not seal, creating an exhaust leak. The ZoomieSBC header set for small block Chevrolet engine applications.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a 4L60E four-speed automatic transmission and a 10-bolt rear axle. The transmission is said to have been rebuilt under prior ownership. An aftermarket dual exhaust system has been fitted and terminates before the rear axle.
However, that sort of look is best suited for trailered show vehicles and not those expected to travel city streets that may include driveways, v-drains or dips, speed bumps, or other hazards that could damage the Zoomie header set. Here is an example of a small block Chevrolet D-port cylinder head that requires the Sanderson D-Port header flange. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a TH350 three-speed automatic transmission and a Ford 9" rear end.
When you bid we pre-authorize your credit card for the service fee (this helps prevent fraud). If you win the auction, your card will be charged for the service fee and you pay the seller directly for the vehicle. If you don't win, your existing pre-authorization will be released. GM sold the Vortec 8100 to Workhorse (now a division of Navistar), making it one of the most popular engine choices in gasoline-powered Class A motorhomes during the early 2000s.
These mockup header components are sized for PVC tubing which are used to easily and quickly connect the "bends" of the header. Some Zoomie headers are offered in two lengths, either a standard 16″ (40.64 cm) or a longer 19″ (48.26 cm). It is relatively easy to determine the length needed for the application.
Dealerships could finally order a Firebird Convertible from a recognized coach builder that was already converting other GM products (though more than a dozen other companies had been converting F-bodies into convertibles since 1982 for Pontiac & Chevrolet dealers). ASC (American Sunroof Company, Later "American Specialty Cars") (of ASC McLaren fame) offered Pontiac Dealerships a Firebird/Formula/Trans Am/GTA convertible. ASC was contracted to convert all of the official Camaro Convertibles from 1987 to 1992. However, due to fuel economy restrictions mandated by the EPA, a convertible Firebird would have been assessed a $1200 Gas Guzzler Tax because the LB9 & L98 when paired with a Trans Am or GTA would have been lower than 22.5 average MPG.
A 409 hp (305 kW) version of this engine was also available, developing 1 hp per cubic inch with a dual four-barrel aluminum intake manifold and two Carter AFB carburetors. It had a forged steel crankshaft.[14] This dual-quad version was immortalized in the Beach Boys song titled "409". The market offers a range of sbc exhaust headers, each tailored for different applications. Chevy 350 headers are sought after for their compatibility with the popular 350 small block engines, providing a significant uplift in performance. For those seeking to boost their vehicle's efficiency, exhaust headers for 350 chevy engines are a go-to choice, as they are designed to facilitate better exhaust gas flow. Small block chevy headers also come in various styles, such as sbc block hugger headers for tight engine compartments and sbc shorty headers for ease of installation and maintenance.
The problem originates in the technical understanding of what constitutes a true D-PORT versus a D-shape. The D-Port roof extends well above the centerline of the exhaust port, whereas the D-shaped port fits nicely inside what is deemed a standard port dimension. As shown in the graphic below, the d-shape easily fits within the common round or square port flange opening. Many specialty header designs such as Lake Headers, Lake Pipes, and Zoomies are designed to be era correct for certain car builds.
Bore x stroke were both up from the 348 cu in (5.7 L) to 4.31 in × 3.5 in (109.5 mm × 88.9 mm). On December 17, 1960, the 409 engine was announced along with the Impala SS (Super Sport) model. The initial version of the engine produced 360 hp (268 kW) with a single 4-barrel Carter AFB carburetor.
You will receive notification of your enrollment in the extended product warranty program via email within 24 hours of placing your order. This is top quality soft wall exhaust hose It's pliable construction makes it easier to work with than hard wall hose. This hose allows you to make only very slight bends due to its corrugated design used in extreme-duty applications.
Aside from the new cylinder head design and the reversion to a conventional 90 degree cylinder head deck angle, the Mark IV shared many dimensional and mechanical design features with the W-series engine. The cylinder block, although more substantial in all respects, used the same cylinder bore spacing of 4.84 in (123 mm) with a larger 2.75 in (70 mm) main bearing dimension, increased from the 2.5 in (63.5 mm) of the older engine. Like its predecessor, the Mark IV used crowned pistons, which were castings for conventional models and impact extruded (forged), solid skirt types in high performance applications. Small block Chevy (SBC) headers are critical components in the automotive performance realm, designed to enhance the exhaust flow from the engine, thereby improving horsepower and torque. These headers are suitable for a variety of vehicles, catering to the diverse needs of the small block Chevrolet engines. We often see confusion in what is considered a D-Port cylinder head for small block Chevrolet engine applications.
To be clear, 99% of all applications will use the standard 16″ length. The longer 19″ version requires a much higher chassis or engine location to allow necessary ground clearance. Red-finished steel wheels wear spun-aluminum covers and are mounted with Coker Classic whitewall tires. The front suspension features a dropped axle, a transverse leaf spring, and split wishbones, while lowering blocks have been added to the rear leaf springs.
See measurements to check that they really fit your car / bodywork / chassis. There are a few different styles of header lengths out there today, and here are the two most common; "shorty" and "full-length" which are also called long tube headers. The cabin features a bench seat trimmed in white and red vinyl upholstery that carries over to the door panels and trunk. A Lokar shifter has been installed along with a red headliner and carpets. Information comes from 1989 ASC Order log, the Order log show only 324 of the reported 330 convertibles, as of May 2022, two of those missing 6 vehicles have been identified and added to the above data. As a side note there are a known 5 L98 Powered Camaros made in 1987, making the total number of L98 Powered Firebird and Camaro Convertibles produced some of the rarest and sought after third Gens made with a total of around 204 produced for both lines all years combined.
All Hedman C10 headers are made in the USA, and are covered by our limited lifetime warranty. Aftermarket headers are usually made from either mild steel or stainless steel. The basic mild steel headers will be quite a bit less in cost, however they will sacrifice durability and longevity due to rust and corrosion with long term use.
For this reason, Pontiac did not directly offer a convertible through dealers like the Camaro. However, these were not an official Pontiac offering, they are considered coach convertibles. The conversion of the Firebird was identical to the "factory" Camaros of the same model year. The exception was the obvious cosmetic changes, the rear quarter caps, spoiler (which was a base model spoiler cut off) and the high-mount third brake light were Firebird convertible specific. Firebird Formula was re-introduced, available with a choice of V8s (LG4, LB9 305 TPI, or L TPI), 16-inch convex wheels, and the earlier Trans Am "Turbo Bulge" hood.
To provide clearance for that long-stroke, engineers modified both the block and the connecting rods. Four-bolt main caps and a forged rotating assembly assure strength and durability. During development, a single engine endured more than 200 simulated drag strip passes on a dynamometer. From 1991, the 454 was updated to the new Gen V block, crankshaft and heads.
An early roadster or coupe with a set of loud and proud Lake Headers brings back the early days of Salt Flat racing. Nothing makes a statement quite like a high powered V8 engine firing up with a set of Zoomie headers. They have been a staple of the drag racing scene since the beginning and what better way to say "I came to race" then a set of Zoomies. The 350ci Chevy V8 crate engine is equipped with a four-barrel carburetor, an aluminum intake manifold, and short-tube exhaust headers.
Exterior details include a louvered hood, a single-piece windshield, rear fender skirts, tunneled teardrop taillights, chrome bumpers, and dual exhaust outlets. The car is not equipped with windshield wipers, and delamination is visible in the glass. To order a Firebird Convertible, the dealership would order a T-top Firebird and have it drop shipped to ASC, One Sunroof Center, Southgate, MI for the conversion alongside "Factory" Camaros. Once complete, ASC would ship the now Firebird convertible to the participating dealership for delivery.
Made from durable 16-gauge steel, Those PCE headers feature 3/8 in. Thick flanges that are heavy enough to maintain header integrity, yet pliable enough to seal each exhaust port. If your vehicle is using aftermarket components, parts from other applications, or custom altered parts, then it is the installer's responsibility to verify fitment. The Trans Am GTA was Pontiac's pride and joy with a standard 5.7L 350 Tuned-Port Injection (TPI). All of these options were packaged into the Trans Am under the RPO code Y84, and the model was produced until the end of third-generation F-body production in 1992.
Some GTA's ended up with drum brakes on the rear, presumably because of a shortage of disc brake parts. Ultimately, very few Trans Ams, GTA's, and Formulas were produced in this model year, as most buyers were waiting for the next-generation models. If you're looking for headers designed for maximum street performance, look no further than PCE. They are designed for stock or mildly modified engines for the value-conscious buyer.
VATS-equipped cars also displayed anti-theft system warning decals in the lower rear corners of the side windows. A new CD player was offered, shoulder belts were added in the back seat, and the convertible model carried over. The 170 hp LG4 carbureted 5.0L V8 was dropped in favor of the new 170 hp L03 5.0L V8 with throttle body injection.
The special edition Formula Firehawk that appeared in 1991 was still available, although a lot of dealers were unaware of its existence. The lack of awareness and a sky high price tag conspired to keep the sales figures down on the special Firehawk. As for the rest of the line, new exterior colors were available, including a bright "Jamaica Yellow". One interior color was changed, from the camel colored beechwood to a greyish beige. One improvement made on all 1992 F-bodies was the addition of some extra bonding agents to stiffen the structure of the cars. The extra bonding was an attempt to correct squeaks and rattles that some owners had complained about.
The custom interior is trimmed in red and white vinyl and outfitted with a Lokar shifter, tilt steering column, and Dolphin instrumentation. This customized ’39 Ford is now offered with a clean Texas title in the seller’s name. The Firebird remained basically unchanged from the previous model year. All automatic transmission Firebirds now received a T-handle shifter knob, and the shift indicator changed for the Automatic Overdrive 700-R4. Midyear, the L69 high output 305 cubic inch engine was introduced. In all forms (except the aluminum ZL-1), the Mark IV was slightly heavier than the W-series model, with a dry weight of about 685 lb (311 kg).
L69 were built in 1986; it was discontinued because of fuel vapor lock (boiling) problems. ] indicate the 305 TPI engine output was decreased from 210 hp to 190 hp caused by switching to a less aggressive camshaft profile, while others[who? Paint RPO's were changed to reflect the new base-coat/clear-coat paint process. American Sunroof (ASC), licensed by Chevrolet to build the 1987 Camaro convertible, also built three 1986 Trans Am convertibles as a "design exercise".
Special Viscount "PMD" bucket seats were optional, featuring a small opening in the headrest and a PMD logo in the center of the backrest. Leather seats were also available on both the standard seats and Viscount "PMD" seats. A standard locking rear glovebox was mounted on the rear driver's side of the cargo area and a mini spare tire was hidden behind the opposite panel on the passenger side. A lockable cargo door on the rear floor area and a retractable cargo area privacy shade were also available as options on all Firebirds. The crew at BluePrint Engines have designed several drop-in engine/transmission packages for Factory Five customers. If you have our Factory Five kit, BluePrint will sell you the running gear needed to finish your car.
At Walker, it's more than peace of mind in knowing we lead the industry with unparalleled level of compliance. It's more than our precision-fit or full engine-to-tailpipe product offering, Walker sets the standards. Recommended installation to the engine is high temperature RTV such as Ultra Black® without a gasket. Some have used the original equipment type MLS (multi-layer steel) gaskets with good success. We recommend using solid copper gaskets to avoid blowouts at that joint.
It utilized new "low density" taillight lenses with a grid-style pattern rather than the "louvered" pattern in use since 1981. The Trans Am came standard with the "High Tech" 15-inch concave aluminum wheels from the previous year, but it was also now available with the a version of the 15th Anniversary's WS6 suspension and its "Aero Tech" 16-inch aluminum wheels, but in finished Natural Silver. A Borg-Warner 9-bolt differential was made available for the first time, and was said to be stronger than the standard corporate 10-bolt axle. The standard rear spoiler from previous years was still standard, but an optional wrap-around "Aero Spoiler" was now available in black and gave the car a new more modern look, (it is unique for 1985 & 1986 as it had a texture).
This aerospace and military-grade technology adds excellent protection to your headers while offering the benefit of thermal control in your engine bay. It also improves cylinder scavenging of exhaust gases and increases the longevity of your header investment. An even more powerful version, producing 465 hp (347 kW) and 610 lb⋅ft (827 N⋅m), of the 454, then dubbed LS-7 (not to be confused with the modern, mid 2000s, 7-litre Chevrolet Corvette engine that powered the C6 Z06, which is an LS7). Several LS-7 intake manifolds were individually produced and sold to the general public by a few Chevrolet dealers as optional performance parts. The LS-7 was later offered as a crate engine from Chevrolet Performance with an officially rated power minimum of 500 hp (373 kW) gross.
This engine was superseded by the 409 cu in (6.7 L) as Chevrolet's top performing engine in 1961 and went out of production for cars at the end of that year. It was produced through 1964 for use in large Chevrolet trucks. We have spent decades building a community of like-minded car enthusiasts who rely on our quality headers to maximize their engines. Later blocks intended for performance use had the main oil gallery moved up to the cam bearing bore area and provided "priority main" oiling, improving the oil system even further. As part of the head redesign, the spark plugs were relocated so that they entered the combustion chamber at an angle relative to the cylinder centerline, rather than the straight-in relationship of the W-series engine. Due to the new spark plug angle, the clearance provided by the distinctive scalloped valve covers of the W-series was no longer needed, and wide, rectangular covers were used. The Chevrolet "big-block" engine is a term for a series of large-displacement, naturally-aspirated, 90°, overhead valve, gasoline-powered, V8 engines; that were developed and produced by the Chevrolet Division of General Motors, from the 1950s until present.
It has a reinforcing wire threaded through the wall to increase strength. All exhaust hose is sold by the inch, i.e add quantity of 24 for 24 in. This hose allows you to make only very slight bends due to its hardwall design used in extreme-duty applications. It looks exactly like the softwall hose except it has a reinforcing wire threaded through the wall to increase strength. Stainless Works, LTXT, Up and Forward, chevy sbc headers, Turbo Headers, LT1 Flange, 1-7/8" Primaries, 3" Slip-fit collectors, Back Purged, Increased Air Flow, CNC mandrel bent, 304 Stainless Steel, Mill Finish,... This product may contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
Mark IV engines saw extensive application in Chevrolet and GMC medium duty trucks, as well as in Blue Bird Corporation's All American and TC/2000 transit buses (the latter up until 1995, using a 427 with purpose-built carburetor). In addition to the 427, a 366 cu in (6.0 L) version was produced for the commercial market. Both the 366 and 427 commercial versions were built with a raised-deck, four-bolt main bearing cap cylinder to accommodate an extra oil control ring on the pistons. Unfortunately, the raised deck design complicated the use of the block in racing applications, as standard intake manifolds required spacers for proper fit.
Mid-year, TPI-equipped cars only received blank throttle body plates rather than ones that had been marked "TUNED PORT INJECTION" on similar engines in prior model years; and black-painted valve covers replaced the silver components from previous years. As use of the L98 in the Corvette had come to an end, rough-cast runners found their way into L98-equipped Firebirds, and some cars received special rubber snubbers on the rear hatch frame that were designed to make the hatch more stable. This would be the last year for the light weight deep dish cross-laced wheels that had been available since 1987, and had been styled to look like expensive aftermarket rims. It would be the last year for the GTA, the last year for concealed windshield wipers, and the last year for the aerodynamic body with the long hood and low roofline. It was also the last year for full leather covering on the front seats.
Although introduced as the Vortec 7400 in 1996, it was basically a 454 big-block with a hydraulic roller cam, parts more suitable for use in light trucks, and more advanced technology. The engine had MPFI (multi-port fuel injection), which gave slightly more power and better fuel economy, and two valves per cylinder. The engine had a bore and stroke of 4+1⁄4 in × 4 in (108.0 mm × 101.6 mm), producing 290 hp (216 kW) at 4000 rpm and 410 lb⋅ft (556 N⋅m) at 3200 rpm. In 1971, the LS-5 produced 365 hp (272 kW) and 550 lb⋅ft (746 N⋅m), and the LS-6 option came in at 425 hp (317 kW) and 575 lb⋅ft (780 N⋅m). In 1972, only the LS-5 remained, when SAE net power ratings and the move towards emission compliance resulted in a temporary output decline, due to lowered compression, to about 270 hp (201 kW) and 468 lb⋅ft (635 N⋅m). The 1973 LS-4 produced 275 hp (205 kW) and 468 lb⋅ft (635 N⋅m), with 5 hp (4 kW) and 10 lb⋅ft (14 N⋅m) gone the following year.

The push rods also acted as conduits for oil flow to the valve gear. Due to the relatively low mass of the valve train, mechanical lifter versions of the W-series engine were capable of operating at speeds well beyond 6000 rpm. At Lemons Headers, our company has spent over 25 years building specific jigs for a variety of Chevy models. This means we can build the perfect header for our clients, whether they are in the area or live halfway across the world. Our jigs give us the ability to handcraft a header for any cylinder head while also accommodating different deck heights.
The Mk4 kit is configured to accommodate some big block Ford engines, small block Ford windsor engines, and modular 4.6L and the 5.0L Coyote engine. Kit comes with alternate drive pulley assembly, oil filter relocate kit, and exhaust assembly to adapt Mustang engine and headers to vintage side exit exhausts. Chevrolet capitalized on the versatility of the 427 design by producing a wide variety of high-performance, "over-the-counter" engine components as well as ready-to-race "replacement" engines in shipping crates. The 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 was introduced in the 1965 Corvette as the L78 option and in the Z-16 Chevelle as the L37 option. Also retained from the W-series design were the race-proven Moraine M400 aluminum bearings first used in the 409, and the highly efficient "side oiling" lubrication system, which assured maximum oil flow to the main and connecting rod bearings at all times.
We also make it easy for you to use the engine of your choice with a variety of available headers and engine/transmission mount assemblies. Mark IV engines also found themselves widely used in power boats. Many of these engines were ordinary Chevrolet production models that were fitted with the necessary accessories and drive system to adapt them to marine propulsion. Mercury Marine, in particular, was a major user of the Mark IV in marine drives, and relabeled the engines with their corporate logo. As with the 265 and 283 cu in (4.3 and 4.6 L) "small-block" engines, the W-series valve gear consisted of tubular steel pushrods operating stud-mounted, stamped-steel rocker arms.
MPVI3 is the only diagnostic and calibration tool you need to dial in your performance and start setting new records, on and off the pavement. The Mk4 Complete kit gives you everything you need to build your car, in one big package. The only things you’ll need are the engine/transmission/rear end, wheels/tires, and a paint job.
Hardened valve seats further increased reliability and helped allow these engines to last much longer than the earlier versions, even without the protection previously provided by leaded fuel. 1974 was the last year of the 454 in the Corvette, although the Chevelle offered it in the first half of the 1975 model year. It was also available in the full size Impala/Caprice through model year 1976. It gained its nickname due to the incredible speeds cars equipped with it attained during its debut, being considerably faster than the well known W-series powered cars. This "secret" engine was a unique design incorporating aspects of both the W-series and the mid-1965 introduced Mark IV,[19] referred to in sales literature as the "Turbo-Jet V8". Our team of passionate perfectionists are committed to providing the handmade, custom header that will revolutionize your vehicle’s performance.

The Trans Am drag coefficient was measured at 0.32 but was as low as 0.29 with the standard Aero wheels instead of the High-Tech turbo aluminum wheels. At the time, it was the most aerodynamically efficient car GM ever produced. The new Firebird shrank to a 101-inch wheelbase, losing more than 8 inches in overall length, measured about an inch narrower, and weighed nearly 500 lb (227 kg) less than its 1981 predecessor.
This remained the procedure for dealerships through the 1989 model year. According to ASC, they did not convert any Firebirds for the 1990 model year. As popularity increased and car became lighter & more aerodynamic for the 1991 model year, the process was simplified as Pontiac offered a convertible through normal dealer ordering channels via RPO's. A Total of 173 Firebird Convertibles were reported by ASC for 1987. Over the years we have expanded our chassis kit to include factory-new parts as well. The only additional things you’ll need are your own engine/transmission/rear end, wheels/tires, and paint.
With extensive use and run time those beautiful chrome plated headers will eventually start peel or flake and start rusting. Chrome headers on show cars that see very little run time (in and out of a trailer) are where this finish is best suited. One option you could pursue to extend the life of your headers is ceramic coating them.
Chevrolet gave all 427 engines except the ZL1 a torque rating of 460 lb⋅ft (624 N⋅m). Many engine conversions will be up against manual transmissions. We offer pilot bushings for just about all of the combinations that we've encoutered over the years. Our Chevrolet V8 engine mounts are designed to make the installation go as well as possible, and to give you the installation flexibility your project may need.
Available in two lengths and includes individual baffle inserts for each tube. Included below is a chart showing the dimensions commonly used for header measurement when checking for fitment, especially with universal fit headers. Here at Speedway Motors we list these dimensions on each product page, and you can narrow your search results by them as well. Chrome plating is another header coating option you may consider, however it is typically suggested for a show car type of application only.
While selecting the right headers, it's important to consider the specific requirements of your vehicle and engine to ensure optimal performance gains. In addition to purchasing this product, Flashark highly recommends that you purchase Flashark and Spelab's new collaborative product, the silicone coolant hose kit; to replace the stock rubber coolant hose in your car's cooling system. Are silicone coolant hoses better? Coolant hoses transport the coolant—a mixture of water and antifreeze—from the engine to the radiator and back. The coolant absorbs heat from the engine block and heads and then releases this heat through the radiator, where airflow dissipates it away from the vehicle. This continuous flow is crucial for preventing engine overheating, which can lead to severe damage or failure. The structural differences between exhaust headers and manifolds are the material and size.
The newly designed side view mirror housings, made of light alloy metal, were almost cone shaped, with the point facing the wind. The windshield wipers were hidden under the hood with the air intake for the climate control system. The retractable headlamps popped up from the leading edge of the hood. Smooth wheelcovers were available on the Trans Am, attached to turbine finned alloy wheels. A frameless, flush-mounted, compound curved rear glass hatchback decklid provided 30.9 cu ft (0.87 m3). Of cargo space with the rear seats folded, and an optional wiper.[7] It provided no disturbance to the airflow over the back of the car.

All Firebird models underwent redevelopment to boost sales as a number of power train improvements were introduced. The Firebird received a restyled nose with black wrap-around inserts known as "bumperettes" to replace the grille inserts; wrap-around "bumperettes" were also added to the rear bumper. The tail lights remained unchanged from the previous "louvered" style design. The carbureted V6 was replaced with a new, multi-port fuel-injected 2.8L V6 making 135 hp. The RPO "Y84" & "Y81" Recaro Edition Trans Am S/E's were slightly revised. The exterior still featured a Black painted body, but gone was the Gold paint on the lower half of the body.
This header design will typically add low to mid RPM torque without sacrificing top end horsepower. Another reason for their popularity is that some tight clearance applications a Tri-Y can be constructed to fit when there is no room for traditional 4 into 1 long tube headers. Don’t go out and buy a 1 7/8 inch primary tube header for your street driven 350, which is what is commonly considered overkill.
The cabin is outfitted with a sliding rear window, a push-button AM/FM stereo, and air conditioning. The selling dealer acquired the truck in 2022 and has since added approximately 1,500 miles. This C10 is now offered in Alabama with an owner’s manual and a North Carolina title. These RS-X symmetrical port cylinder heads are named for powertrain engineer Ron Sperry, who designed them as one of his final accomplishments in more than 50 years working on General Motors performance and racing engines. Sperry also introduced symmetrical ports to Chevy's iconic small-block V-8, with the Gen III LS1 engine that debuted in the 1997 Chevrolet Corvette.
It had slightly reduced power compared to the L and used a different PCM. The L21 was paired with the early 4-speed Allison automatic transmission or manual transmission, depending on the application. Beginning in 1969, the highest performance 427 models were fitted with the new open (vs. closed) chamber cylinder heads, along with design improvements in crankshafts, connecting rods, and pistons, adopted from the Can-Am development program. The first iteration of the W-series engine was the 1958 "Turbo-Thrust" 348-cubic-inch (5.7 L), originally intended for use in Chevrolet trucks but also introduced in the larger, heavier 1958 passenger car line. Bore and stroke was 4+1⁄8 in × 3+1⁄4 in (104.8 mm × 82.6 mm), resulting in a substantially oversquare design.
These double slip merge collectors allow the Turbo Header primary tubes to move slightly while decreasing exhaust gas leaks at the slip joints. Since all of our fabrication is done in house, visit our Contact Us page to see how we can configure your next set of Turbo Headers to meet your needs. An improvement on the T-top cars was introduced mid year on all F-bodies. T-top cars now came with new seals which greatly reduced leaks into the passenger compartment.
Ceramic coating will not only reduce corrosion but it also adds a thermal barrier which will reduce the under-hood temperatures. It is an excellent option to consider when you are using mild steel headers. Ceramic coating goes by many brand names and here at Speedway Motors ours is called AHC which stands for Armor Hot Coat. For a bit more information on Speedway Motors AHC coating, click here.
Choose either vintage/replica or modern/performance gauges to complement an authentic street style dash. Complete assembly comes with covered aluminum dash, dash buttons, toggles and indicator lights, switches, and horn. The four-spoke steering wheel frames an 85-mph speedometer and gauges for voltage, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 30k miles, although the speedometer and odometer do not work. The bench seat is trimmed in blue vinyl upholstery joined by a color-coordinated dashboard, door panels, and carpets. Interior appointments include a sliding rear window, a push-button AM/FM stereo, air conditioning, and Chevrolet-branded rubber floormats.
The heavy wall construction of these manifolds means less heat-absorption by the tubing, which means less energy produced by the engine's combustion process is wasted as heat, and is instead conserved as energy and velocity going to your turbos. This also leads to cooler engine bay temperatures, which can also improve intake air temps, increasing the density of oxygen in the air, leading to further power gains. Sanderson’s Ceramic Coating is recommended for every vehicle application and is the default finish selection choice above. To meet high standards of quality, Sanderson applies a multi-layer inside and outside aluminized ceramic coating in-house and then polishes the coating to a high luster.
But we also want to consider the level of torque your car needs which is affected by the tube size. Maybe you want to add a little flare and protection with a strong timeless ceramic finish. When working with experienced header builders like Lemons, we can provide our input to optimize your exhaust.
Whether it is our handcrafted, custom-made Chevy headers or our tried-and-true reputation, we are proud to be revered in the auto industry. With hundreds of customized header applications, a team of loyal and talented employees, and a community of racing enthusiasts, we are honored to be a part of the legacy, Dan Lemons has built. There are plenty of header options for the most famous engine of all time, but after many years and many Jeep conversions, we've narrowed our favorites down to these block-hugging, short style headers for the Small Block V8 for nearly all models of Jeeps. Tri-Y headers get their name from the design of the primary tubes. One header will have four primary tubes which Y into two secondary tubes and finally Y again into one collector creating three Y connections, thus the name Tri-Y.
GM replaced many sets with tops made of glass under warranty, but the acrylic tops continued as standard-issue through 1992. All Firebirds optioned with rear disc brakes now received PBR brake calipers and larger brake rotors, which resolved issues encountered with previous-model rear discs and increased stopping power. Introduction of GM's Vehicle Anti Theft System (VATS) or PASS-Key made all Firebirds more theft-resistant. The system was adapted from GM's higher-end Corvette and Cadillac vehicles in response to an escalating trend among car thieves to target the Camaro and Firebird. VATS incorporated a small resistor into the ignition key shaft which was read by a sensor when the key was inserted.
Some common types of shorty headers are block hugger, tight tuck, and clipster headers. This 1939 Ford Deluxe coupe was turned into a street rod under prior ownership, and it is powered by a 350ci Chevy V8 mated to a TH350 three-speed automatic transmission. Finished in black with red pinstriping, the car features a chopped roof, shaved exterior, louvered hood, rear fender skirts, tunneled taillights, and chrome bumpers. Front disc brakes have also been added along with a dropped front axle and a Ford 9″ rear end.

Distributors with adjustable collars that allowed adjustments to the length of the distributor shaft also had to be used with 366 and 427 truck blocks. Selecting the appropriate SBC headers requires consideration of the engine specifications and vehicle application. Whether it's for a restoration project or a performance upgrade, options such as headers chevy small block and small block chevrolet headers provide a spectrum of choices for enthusiasts and professionals alike. It's essential to match the header design to the intended use, whether it's for street performance, racing, or a custom setup. Enhanced exhaust flow directly translates to improved engine efficiency and power output.
All V8 engines received serpentine belt systems and the air conditioning compressors were moved to the passenger's side of the engine, de-cluttering the engine compartment. The Firebird Formula received new high tech 16x8-inch aluminum wheels with distinctive silver "WS6" center caps. The GTA wheels were slightly restyled, and the convex 16-inch wheels were dropped as all Trans Ams received the 16x8-inch diamond-spoke aluminum wheels, available in different colors (white, red, charcoal, and black) in addition to the GTA's gold. The GTA received a new steering wheel with integral radio controls. The Trans Am was made available with body-colored ground effects like those on the GTA. All Firebirds received center, high-mounted stop lamps to comply with Federal legislation; these were placed on top of the back hatch window.
Most of our techs agree that a street application 350 will benefit well from a header with 1 1/2" to 1 5/8" diameter primary tubes and 2 1/2 or 3 inch collectors. What this size does is creates a faster removal of spent gas and also develops just enough backpressure for a broad torque response. This marked the final production year for the Third Generation platform. Release of the Fourth Generation model was imminent, and Pontiac made few changes to the 1992 Firebird.
A dark-tinted version of the base Firebird's tail lights were fitted to the rear of the car and also featured a Silver or Gold "Screaming Eagle" (Phoenix) between them. Rubber "Mini-Spats" (stone deflectors) were mounted just before the front and rear wheels, and were toned down from the 70's design used on the earlier second generation Trans Am. Styled loosely after the earlier '80/'81 Turbo Trans Am, an optional "Turbo Bulge" hood was available on the Trans Am. Plans had originally been made to use a refined version of Pontiac's 4.9 and Turbo 4.9L (301) engine. It was scrapped at the last minute, leaving many to speculate as to what could have been, had the engine been allowed to survive like its turbocharged companion, the Buick Turbo 3.8L V6. Despite this, the Turbo Bulge hood remained on the option list; on the V-8 RPO LU5 Crossfire 305 V-8, it was made functional, and even a lightweight aluminum version of this hood, "RPO T45", was available on the option list.
Header wrap or exhaust wrap is a very effective way to reduce under-hood temperatures. It works by insulating the header tubes retaining the heat inside the headers and greatly reduces the heat radiating from the headers. It can be used in nearly any application and is available in black, white, and titanium colors (titanium is shown below). It is easily secured to the header tubes using header wrap ties or stainless steel hose clamps.

We can make it in the tube size you need, in a stepped or non-stepped configuration, and with all the customizations you could ever want. These are designed to fit the Classic Small Block Chevrolet engine 1955 and up. Two styles are available for spark plug clearance on standard and angle plug heads. GPHeaders’ Small Block Chevy Header Mockup Kit allows you to design a set of truly custom headers without the vehicle ever leaving your location. We supply our customers with mockup header flanges and collectors along with our adjustable aluminum mockup elbows allowing you to design any header imaginable.
